Bespoke Garden Buildings

The customer in this project had an unattractive storage shed that was basically leaky and creaky and needed transforming into a functional and aesthetically pleasing space. With budget tight they asked if we could utilise as much of the original building as possible. It already had a partial brick skirt that we were asked to continue around the building and a double glazed window with one opener that they wanted to retain.

We tied into the original brick skirt and run the support wall all the way round, turning in by one brick at the door to create a reveal and recessed latch and brack door. We removed the old corrugated plastic ceiling and built in a pitched roof using marine ply and "faux slate" bitumen tiles. We removed the old featheredge and replaced it with tongue and groove boards to create a solid, weathertight facia.

Inside we boarded the ceiling with ply to create a flat surface for recessed spotlights and crafted some frames and glass to allow daylight in via the apex. After a few power sockets and some shelving, we delivered an attractive garden structure that will last many years and look far more expensive than it actually was.

Flooring

This project was more than just the floor. The customer wanted to incorporate a basement flat into the main house to make a single 5 bedroom property. This meant opening up the ceiling, adding a stair case, removing the old tanking and acid treating the ragstone walls to make an exposed staircase feature

The project involved removing the old lathe and plaster ceiling and replacing with new ceiling boards and recessed LED spotlights. The gas pipe to upstairs kitchen and several other feeds needed resiting to allow access up the new staircase. The doors were replaced with oiled-oak latch and brace doors and the spruce staircase was stained and lacquered to give an aged Victorian look

After replacing the radiators with anthracite period models and chrome TRVs, the checkerboard floor was laid with borders and corners flowed into the door reveals. skirting provided a completely period but fresh new feel to this tired basement

Panelling

This project took geometry skills to a new level. The customer wanted panelling to start at the entrance of the property and run up the stairs and around. Apart from being aesthetically appealing the panelling needed to provide a tough and durable finish that can be wiped clean in the event of children or pets brushing up against it

The project involved a plaster skim of the hall, stairs and landing to provide a completely flat surface for the MDF panels and mouldings. Then a template was carefully mapped out on the wall to accommodate the 45 degree ascent whilst keeping the panels evenly spaced. The panels were affixed using a combination of adhesive and countersunk screws to support the structure while the glue dried while allowing for some adjustment

When the base panels were in place and sufficiently dried, the panelling was further enhanced with a picture rail style moulding along the length of the panels, half-round mouldings on the outer corners to provide a smooth feel and quarter-round beading to give the panels a bullnose effect where they met the wall

After an appropriate drying period the moulding felt solid and immovable on the wall. Any joints or gaps were filled with a flexible caulking and wiped clean before the entire unit was primed, undercoated and a final light sand before an eggshell top coat was applied

Rendering

In this project the customer had an old imprinted render block effect on the side of their house. The majority of it has blown and it was ready to fall off. In addition, there had been some kind of building attached to it in the past and the steel hangers were still visible through the render. Broken plastic conduit carried a power cable on the outside of the wall and the waste pipes from the bathroom were fitted in white - which had gone a nasty shade of yellow

The project involved removing the older render, applying an SBS coating to the thirsty Victorian brickwork, recessing electric cables into the wall and replacing the waste with the correct coloured black variety. The old render pretty much fell away leaving a nice flemish-bond brick wall that would have benefitted from just repointing and just leaving. However, the original builders had "pecked" the surfaces of the brick to create a key for the render so that option had sadly gone.

The brickwork was sealed with SBS to prevent water from re-emulsifying the mixture across the entire surface. After allowing adequate drying time, the coat was applied, polished and then imprinted using a laser level and a steel darby

A week later, and thanks to the hottest, driest spell in 50 years, the render was ready to paint with a fine textured Sandtex masonry paint ensuring that the render is good for another generation at least

Door Hanging

A well‑hung door makes all the difference — in appearance, function, and security. In this project hanging a front door so it fitted perfectly was only a very small part of the brief. The customer had a beautiful Victorian house adorned with a composite UPVC front door that was both ugly and had started to break down internally - it flexed when pushed! They had managed to source an original hardwood Victorian door that had a beautiful, original acid etched glass panel and wanted it for their home

The challenge: The victorian door was 85mm too short and 25mm to thin.The customer wanted a smooth painted surface to the front and bare waxed wood on the inside. The original aluminunium frame was sound, so it was agreed that the door should be retrofitted to fit the frame. The brasswork should be taken off and lovelingly restored and the door extended on all edges using oak

The door was taken away and stripped at our workshop taking great care not to damage the glass. Accurate measurements were taken of the frame using vernier calipers to ensure that the new door fitted the frame to the millimetre. The door was extended with oak strips dowelled and glued into the original wood, the hinge recessess where cut to match the hinges in the frame and it was hung before removal and paint

The door was then painted on the front and waxed on the inside. The brasswork was cleaned and polished and the door rehung. The customer was delighted with the result and it now looks like it has always been there.

Decking

In this project the client had a pretty much blank canvas. There was an attempt at some stairs leading down the garden but they were so steep it made using them feel dangerous. The garden sloped away heavily from the backdoor of the house so we needed to find a way to make better user of the space. We started by building a strong retaining wall using a blocks infilled with concrete and rebar to form a gentle diagional descent for the steps

We then replaced the old decking with a raised area that followed the line of the steps, fabricated some iron railings and installed safe 12 volt lighting to illuminate the area when the sun went down. A pergola built into the branches of an established tree provided some shade on the hot days and the tree was pruned to integrate with it. This turned an otherwise unusable slope into a spacious entertaining area

The full descent was measured carefully so that 600x1200 porcelan steps could be installed that had even risers between each step providing a safe and wide descent. The retaining wall was decorated with brick slips and mortar to give a realistic brick built look

Finally, the remaining patio was laid along with an outdoor kitchen, a sink with hot and cold water and various IP rated sockets to provide power in all areas. Customer delighted.

Disability Adaptations

Remedial Works

Sometimes you have some work done (or have a go yourself) and it doesn't quite come out the way you hoped. Things that should have been straightforward seem to just spiral into a mess — like this toilet installation for one of our customers.

The original installation had left the cistern 40mm away from the wall, the floor had been badly cut around the base of the pan, the soil pipe leaked, the overflow pipe wasn't even connected, and the whole toilet moved when sat on! The prospect of a flooded downstairs was imminent!

We removed the toilet, relaid the floor, hid the overflow pipe on the other side, specified the correct pan connector, shifted the toilet back onto the wall, secured the whole system with stainless screws, applied a fresh coat of paint — and the problem was solved. The customer was delighted, especially as she thought the job entailed throwing everything away and starting again.
